i left my phone in the cab, now you can't get me. Mason inhaled the last of the rolled joint he carefully held between his fingers and flicked the butt to the ground. He slid his hands into the pockets of his leather jacket and leaned his back against the brick building. A breeze whisked at the nape of his neck, sending a shiver down his spine. He peered down the laneway he was occupying, he caught a glimpse of the line-up that had formed near the entrance of the club and noticed and had grown in size, nearly taking up half the block. Mason’s mind was exhausted, having not slept the past twenty-seven hours, but thanks to the cocaine and alcohol his body didn’t need the rest. To an outsider, he seemed like an addict; Mace begged to differ. He wasn’t addicted, he could quit whenever he wanted, but why would he want to? Drugs and alcohol were the only things he could depend on right now, people were out of the question. Actually, that was an understatement. He did depend on his drug dealer, the various drug dealers he had. Mace also enjoyed the numb feeling he obtained from drugs, he didn’t have to worry about anything, he didn’t have to care about anything, all he had to do was sit there, alone, sometimes with his thoughts.
Thanks to his reputation, Mason had become chummy with a few people that worked at this particular club. After all, he spent most of his time here. He pushed away from the building and slowly made his way through the laneway, passed the massive line of people. He stopped at the bouncer, made eye contact, and with a quick nod, he was inside. He staggered through the gyrating bodies on the dance floor, to the booth he had booked himself, and slumped against the faux leather bench. A female bartender approached with a bottle service menu and Mason shouted for a bottle of Grey Goose Vodka. After she returned with a glass, the bottle, and enough orange juice mix, Mason slipped her the cash and swigged his first shot directly from the bottle.
He was immune to his surroundings, merely focusing right now on the loud bass of the music that rattled through his mind; he was so high he could actually imagine himself in the song. He made himself another drink, this time using the glass provided, and swigged back a large mouthful. He slid his arms out of his jacket and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. Leaning forward, he slowly gazed around the bar. The sight of gyrating bodies, mixed with the thumping music, amazed Mason, everything blurred together in his vision. He closed his eyes, elbows resting on the table, and covered his ears with the palms of his hands. He had no care in the world, not a thought in his mind, and didn’t feel the need to worry about anything. A sly grin appeared across his face as he opened his eyes, reached down, and patted the small baggie filled with cocaine in his pocket. He wasn’t sure where he would end up tonight, as of now, but he had a feeling it was going to be a wild one. words: 536 thanks sophia of caution.

tonight was girls night, and she needed it. slipping the dress on then the black heels under it she looked at herself in the mirror. smiling slightly she headed out of the room, clicking the light off, and headed into the bathroom. turning on the bright flourescent lights she did her make up. red lips, eye liner and mascara. that was all she needed, and wanted. cam never really wore makeup, unless special occassion. hearing a small knock at the apartment door she nearly fell coming around the corner. opening it, a small old woman stood in front of her. hello mrs hornberry, thanks for coming tonight she then instructed the woman to call her if she needed anything. with that the woman shooed her out and told her to have fun.
tonight was club night. cameron wasnt a big club girl, but she needed to get out. as she was driving down the main road to the club the girls had picked to meet at her mind wandered. it wandered places it shouldnt, specifically mason. she let out a sigh, she was always nervous she was going to see him or run into him. finally reaching the parking garage cam parked and got out. the walk to the club was killer, especially in her heels. she hated them, but they looked good on her. as she approached the club she looked at the bouncer, her friends were always let in so he nodded and let her through. cam smiled, it was like being in a whole nother world, no one knew she was a mother with a worried heart that her baby would need her. a mother who would rush off in a heartbeat, who wanted to ge tthat phone call, so she wouldnt have to be at this seedy place.
making her way through the crowd she grabbed a drink off a waitress, cameron was a beer girl, she hated fruity mixed drinks. walking to a small opening to breath cam leaned against the wall, eyes scanning the crowd looking for her friends. a few people bumped into her and one couple pushed against her. excuse me, im a human being not a wall cam made a disgusted noise and moved forward, it was crowded today and she was starting to get anxiety. looking around for her friends she felt her heart beating faster and faster. |

i left my phone in the cab, now you can't get me. A half hour had passed, yet Mace hadn’t drunk any more than two glasses. By this point, the exhaustion of his mind had taken over, he felt like he was in his own world. The club surroundings were nothing but a backdrop, a green screen to his brain. He found himself thinking of things, people, he hadn’t thought about in years; his mom, his best friend, and Cameron. He closed his eyes and pressed his forehead against the cold metal of the table. The past two years had been rough on Mace, he had lost all the people he cared about and his grandfather had thrust the responsibility of the family business upon him. A combination of those events had caused Mason to go numb. Mason sat back up, afraid to drift off in his thoughts, and stood to his feet. All this thinking called for a cigarette.
Mason rudely pushed through the crowd, kept his gaze locked on the floor, and pushed the door that led to the designated smoking area. It was as crowded out here as it was inside; Mason found an open corner, leaned his bare arm against the cold brick, and pulled his pack of cigarettes from the pocket of his pants. There was a neat row of rolled joints right next to four cigarettes. He pulled out a cigarette, wedged it between his lips, and carefully retrieved the lighter from his pocket. He quickly lit the cigarette and took a long drag. The music from inside followed another group of people outside. Mace kept his gaze locked on the ground, his free hand tucked inside his pocket, while the other brought the cigarette to and from his mouth.
He wasn’t in a social mood; he didn’t feel like talking to people that thought they knew him from somewhere, even if they did. He finished the remains of his cigarette, not being able to stand the constant chatter and drunken rambling that surrounded him. He briskly headed back inside; the loud bass of the current song hit him like a wall. He rubbed his temples, suddenly realizing how exhausted he truly was. He headed for the bar, flagged down a bartender, and asked for a glass of water without ice. Even though water was free, he slapped a five on the sticky, wet bar top, and chugged back the water. He spun around, feeling a head rush from the cool water, suddenly very aware of his surroundings. He wasn’t sure how much longer he was going to stay here, but he didn’t think it would be very much longer. As Mace tried to make his way back to his booth, a group of dancing girls shoved against him, pushing him into someone. He shook his head, annoyed, and pulled away from the girl he had been shoved into. He mumbled out a quick apology and made eye contact. He froze. The girl he had been shoved into was Cameron.

cameron loved to go out when she could, but she wouldve loved to have gone out with friends, instead of herself. she hated being alone. when she was alone was when her mind raced the most. when she thought about how fucked up it was that she left mason. she didnt even have the decency to tell him why. she just left a note saying she needed a break. she felt herself shaking a little. her body wasnt cold, she was anxious. she felt as if someone was watching her. slipping her phone slowly back into her bag she looked up at the bar to a group of skeevy looking men. they looked like they bathed in cologne. one winked at her and cameron felt her stomach drop. she didnt need this. not now. not tonight. not ever.
she liked being alone. she liked being cooped up inside, this was not her scene. shuddering after one blew her a kiss she decided it was time to leave. turning quickly on her heel, beer still in hand, but before she could literally run to the exit someone was slamming into her. jesus was all she managed to grunt as her beer slipped from her hands, spilt on her legs and shoes and landed with a clunk, not loud enough to hear over the music. she waited a moment staring down at the beer. she looked up, but wished that she stayed looking down. her heart didnt beat faster, at this point it stopped beating all together. mason, was stsanding right in front of her. she felt her jaw drop slightly, and she was so unsure of what to say to him. |

i left my phone in the cab, now you can't get me. Mason had to blink a few times to ensure his vision wasn’t playing a drug-inspired trick on him. Her hair was styled a little differently, but this was definitely Cameron. He gazed down at the beer he had caused her to spill, feeling terrible as he noticed that it had spilled on her legs and shoes. Mace glanced back at her, his eyes staring directly into hers. He wasn’t sure if he should say something, hold her, apologize, or run in the opposite direction. Everything around him faded into the background as he stood there, frozen. To ensure that this was happening, he slowly reached forward, his fingers grazing against hers. “Cameron?” he finally stuttered, not entirely sure if she could hear him over the music.
The last time he had seen Cameron they had gotten into a ridiculous, petty fight over something that Mace didn’t even remember. That was the last contact he had had with Cameron, aside from the one-liner she had left him on a scrunched up piece of paper. He hadn’t any idea why she had left, where she had went, and why she was back now. He did know that that was also the last time he had spoken to his best friend and Cameron’s older brother. Mason continued to stare blankly at her, his mind working overtime to make up for the exhaustion and to keep up with the whirring thoughts. He had so many questions to ask Cameron, but all her wanted to do right now was hold her. He wanted to pull her against him and hold her as tight as he could. He wanted to apologize for everything that he had ever done wrong to cause her to leave so abruptly.
Right now, all he could do was stare at her, frozen in this position in the middle of the dance floor, while so many bodies around them continued to gyrate to the beat. Another person bumped against his back, pushing him a few inches closer to Cameron, as three girls rushed by holding hands. He felt more awkward than he had ever felt before, more at a loss of words now than he had ever been.

could he tell she was now a mother. did he already know? what was going to happen now? so many things she wanted to know, so many answers she needed to know. the tension between them was growing. cameron missed him, she really did but she was scared. scared he was going to yell, scream, and cause a scene. now and here was not the time or place to do so. cameron gulped hard and looked at he feet which were now stained, looking up she opened her mouth and jumble came out. she shook her head at the music. it was too loud, she couldnt even hear herself think. she needed to be in the quiet with him. as much as she wanted to turn and run, she knew that now was the time. she had to grow up, she had to do what was best for her and for lilly.
feeling herself go weak in the knees as he was pushed closer to her cameron placed her hand on his shoulder as to catch him from falling. she looked at him then her hand and lowered it, awkwardly. cameron was queen of awkward. she hesitated a moment and looked up at him. can we go, please? she let the words flow out. she needed to spend time with him. talk to him. be with him. forget about the past. but the reality was, she had a bigger problem, telling him he was a father. |

i left my phone in the cab, now you can't get me. If it weren’t for the weed calming him down, Mason probably would have dashed in the other direction the moment he had bumped into Cameron. Had he snorted that line of cocaine he was offered when he picked up his stash from his dealer, he wouldn’t have uttered a word to her, looked at her, or even thought about staying. He guessed that he was thankful for that, because he didn’t want to lose Cameron again. He wasn’t even sure if he had gotten her back yet. For all he knew, she was happier now; she could have found someone who treated her the way she deserved to be treated, someone will a lot less baggage than Mace carried. He focused his gaze on the ground right now. It felt like hours had gone by, but it had only been a matter of minutes since he had ran into her.
She said something about leaving, but Mace couldn’t quite make out her exact words over the music. Then her hand touched his shoulder, gently, and only for a few seconds before she pulled it away. This staring game was making him nervous; the fact that Cameron looked nervous was also making him nervous. At the very mention of leaving, he remembered his booth, where his nearly full 26 of Grey Goose sat, along with his leather jacket. He didn’t dare leave Cameron alone right now, fear of never seeing her again; fear of never being able to ask her all the questions he was dying to ask. He knew he could come back for the jacket tomorrow, and he certainly didn’t need the liquor right now.
The song changed and the beat quickened, so did the atmosphere. People started rushing passed them, spilling drinks as the squeezed by, just to get to the dance floor where the DJ had begun to mix a well-known song. Girls screeched the lyrics around them, while guys tried their best to get closer to grind. He realized that he was dying to get out of here, but at the same time he hoped that Cameron wanted to talk to him as much as he wanted to talk to her. “Where did you want to go?” he asked, leaning closer to her as he spoke to ensure she could hear him over the club surroundings. words: 390 thanks sophia of caution.

usually cameron would never have shown such anger, but from some reason, whenever she was with mason she forgot who she was. she escaped her body and became someone else. a more daring cameron. it was her alter ego. for her, he was drugs. he was all she needed. turning back around as the dj started mixing cam shook her head. i really dont care where, i cant be in here anymore. its to dark and well.... she trailed off looking down at her still wet legs. she looked up and shrugged. then remembering her car was outside she looked at him and nodded for him to follow. she was going to be in control tonight. there was no way he was going to take over. it was her turn.

i left my phone in the cab, now you can't get me. The awkward, silent air that hung around he and Cameron, was suffocating Mason. He felt like he had to gasp for air, like the room was getting smaller, that he was losing his hearing and ability to speak. Of course he tried his best to appear calm and collected on the outside, but inside he was nearly shutting down. He gazed at her as she flipped off a tall blonde; it was a side of Cameron he had never seen before. He wasn’t going to say that he didn’t love this Cameron, a more daring Cameron. A Cameron that didn’t appear to give a shit at all right now, it worried him, as much as he did like it. Maybe she had matured and only wanted to talk to Mace to explain that she didn’t want to be a part of his life at all anymore.
He was now ready to leave, even if Cameron wasn’t. At that moment, Cameron stated that she didn’t want to be in here anymore and that she didn’t care where they went. Then, she nodded and motioned for him to follow her and she led them out of the club. Mason assumed this meant she had decided where they were going to go. The music echoed behind him as they neared the exit. Mace rudely elbowed people out of their way whilst trying his best not to lose Cameron in all the commotion. She seemed ready to take charge as Mace admired her backside. He had always thought Cameron was attractive and he still very much did. She may have hurt him by leaving without so much as a goodbye, but Mason had hurt her in the past, and he felt he deserved everything he got. He smiled to himself as his mind boggled with all the memories he had of their relationship.

when she saw him standing right behind her, in the better, or somewhat better light she had from the club sign and street lights, cameron saw his face. he looked tired, worn out and sick. cam shook her head as if trying to make it change, but nothing she could do was going to change what she didnt know. she had talked to isa a bit and isa tried to convince her mason was on drugs, but cam didnt want to believe it. now her heart was starting to hurt. she knew him better, she didnt want him to turn out like this. she didnt want the father of her child to end up dead in a ditch because of a bad trip. she then thought of lilly. shit shit shit she cursed herself under her breath, the baby sitter. she slipped her phone out of her purse and the screen was blank, no missed calls.
letting out a sigh of relief she locked the screen before he could see hte picture of the baby, it was too soon to tell him. looking back up she locked eyes with him again. that was the thing tonight, the awkward silent stare. cameron waited a second and cleared her throat, looking down at her feet. my cars over there unless you have a driver tonight... she scratched the back of her neck awkwardly. this was the most she had spoken to him in two years. |

i left my phone in the cab, now you can't get me. As they pushed through the exit, the Miami heat was still very much present, even though it was nearly one in the morning, and Mace was glad he didn’t risk losing Cameron to go and fetch his jacket. When Cameron turned around to face him, he noticed she seemed uptight and worried about something. He inched closer to her, so the large gap between them wasn’t so large. As she checked her phone, Mason cocked his head, attempting to see what she was frantically checking. Of course his mind flooded with negativity; what if she was late meeting her boyfriend, what if she was supposed to be with her friends, what if she just had somewhere better to be altogether. He frowned, only able to see that she had just locked the screen, anything on her cell phone fading to black.
When they locked eyes this time, Cameron looked relieved, and Mace wondered why. But he felt a lot calmer. Maybe she had actually wanted to be here right now, maybe she actually intended of explaining something to him tonight, this could be the very fresh start Mason had been hoping for, for the past few months. When she spoke, her voice soothed him, even though she was pointing to her car, and then asked if he already had a ride. He always had an arranged ride, considering his grandfather was trying to force him into taking over, a town car was available on speed dial three. “Um, no, no ride tonight,” he stuttered, her awkwardness made him feel twice as awkward about taking up the offer. He motioned towards her car with his hand, “After you?” he asked, his voice hitched with a nervous stutter.

after a few moments and he declined his own ride and nodded towards her car, cameron nodded as well. heading towards her little silver prius she stopped dead in her tracks a few steps before the driver door. she didnt take the baby seat out of the back seat. she felt her heart speeding up. she was going to pass out. there was no way she was going to get around this one. she had to lie. she had to think of something and quick. none of her friends had babies and neither did anyone else she knew. she felt her stomach lurch and do about a thousand flips. she walked and grabbed onto the car, and there was no way she could get another ride. she mumbled a few curse words at herself before looking up, she felt him staring at her.
uh this is it she chuckled nervously. unlocking the car she slid into the driver seat and grabbed the picture of lilly and herself off the visor above her head. she stuffed it in her purse and let out an awkward cough. uhm, dont mind the mess she stated when he got in. she waited for him to question the large car seat in the back. she felt herself going white as she put the key in and started the car with ease. she let out a sigh, her voice shaky. it was going to be a long awkward drive.
(sorry for the little power playing there hah) . |

i left my phone in the cab, now you can't get me. Mason sauntered behind Cameron as she led them towards the parking garage, stopping short alongside a silver Prius. Mace immediately noticed Cameron’s facial expression change to a panicked, frightened look. He suddenly felt like he should have just dialled for his driver and ended the night there, but then he heard the driver door click as Cameron pulled it open. He waited until he heard the passenger door lock click open and then grasped the door handle with his cold hands. When he seen Cameron slide into the driver’s seat, he opened the passenger door and slid into his own seat. Out of the corner of his eye, he watched her snatch something from the visor, and stuff it into her clutch.
Mace wondered what it was as he pulled his door closed, not bothering to reach for his seatbelt. Could it have been a picture of her new flame, a list of phone numbers from eligible boyfriends, or maybe it wasn’t even anything important. He ran his hands awkwardly across his jeans; as Cameron mentioned something about a mess, Mace glanced down at the floor of the car, and then returned his gaze to her. She looked nervous, which made him nervous. “It’s really no bother,” he replied, giving his shoulders a small shrug. It had gotten awkwardly silent in the car, and Mason noticed that Cameron had turned a slight shade of white as she struggled to put the keys in the ignition. He wished she would just start the thing already so that maybe the car would fill with music from the radio and he wouldn’t feel like he had to fill the silence by saying something stupid.
His mind filled with regret, he had no idea why he thought this was a good idea. He was exhausted, slightly stoned, and completely mind boggled. He felt tempted to mention that he had forgotten his jacket, mumble that maybe he would see her some other time, and then bolt. When he glanced behind him, to peer out one of the back windows, he noticed a baby’s car seat buckled in the back. He looked back at her as the car finally roared to life, and pointed with his thumb over his shoulder, “Uh, baby seat?”

once the car started the music started also, filling the air with some sort of noise. reaching over she turned the nob down slightly so she could at least hear herself think. she looked at mason thinking he spoke, but nothing. she looked back at the stearing wheel waiting a moment then shifting into reverse, then drive once out of the spot. she figured she would go back to his house, continue to drink and when she was drunk enough she'd just tell him everything. as she drove she completley forgot the baby seat. it was as if it wasnt there. until he reminded her. she felt her stomach drop and her heart stop. quickly she blurted out its a friends. i babysit for her on weekends she didnt even look at him, or at the seat.
little did he know that in the trunk was all sorts of toys and baby clothes. a few of lilly's books also with pictures of cameron pregnant. she felt herself upchuck, but of course nothing came up. she continued to drive until she reached his place. stopping slowly she waited a moment and looked at him. this is ok right? i kinda figured we could go here, my apartments kind of tiny she shrugged, obviously forgetting to mention it was occupied by a baby at the moment also. |

i left my phone in the cab, now you can't get me. When the car was finally backing out, the sounds of the radio echoing in the background, a little bit of the awkward feeling lifted. He focused his attention on the passing surroundings, realizing immediately that they were headed for his place. It wasn’t that he was about to object and ask her to go somewhere else, she was the one driving after all. He turned to face her when she spoke, explaining that the baby seat belonged to a friend that she babysat for. He nodded in response; it made perfect sense, Cameron had always been a motherly, caring friend. Especially to him, she had always been there for him whenever he needed her. He smiled nervously, his memory panning with all sorts of supporting evidence.
When they slowed to a stop in front of Mason’s place, his heart beat quickened. He remembered his glass bong was left out in the living room, his drug dealer had mentioned spending the night –and was probably passed out in the bathroom–, and he was pretty sure that he had left some cocaine on the coffee table. His hands twitched nervously, so he distracted himself by picking at a hangnail. He wasn’t going to tell Cameron that she couldn’t come inside; his mind started to whir, trying to quickly think up some excuse. Then it occurred to him that his grandfather had just had the back porch refurnished.
“The air conditioning stopped working a few days ago,” he started to explain, the perfect excuse formatting in his mind, “if you don’t mind sitting out back, then it’s all right.” He nodded, reassuring himself, proud that he had formulated all of that almost instantaneously. He made eye contact with her, waiting for some sort of response. Feeling awkward staring at her, Mason pushed open the passenger car door, and stepped out.
